China’s SUV market in May 2026 remained firmly in the hands of new energy vehicles. Out of the top 26 models, 22 are electrified. Tesla’s Model Y defended the crown with 28,911 units, but the real headline is the explosive debut of Leapmotor A10 — a new compact EV that rocketed straight to second place with 22,306 units in just its third month on sale.

Leapmotor A10’s arrival is the most important story here. Launched only in March 2026 on an all-new platform, the compact EV has already outsold every traditional rival in the sub-100k RMB segment. At $9,662–$12,746 it undercuts almost everything while offering up to 505 km CLTC range and decent ADAS hardware. This is the clearest signal yet that Chinese brands have cracked the formula for high-volume, profitable small EVs.
Li Auto L6 continues to eat Tesla’s lunch in the family segment. Despite being an extended-range vehicle (EREV), it sits comfortably at #3. Chinese buyers are clearly voting with their wallets for the combination of big space, no range anxiety on long trips, and premium features at a lower entry price than the Model Y Long Range.
Tesla’s moat is still real but narrowing. The Model Y remains the only car above 28,000 units. Its software, charging network, and brand power keep it dominant. However, it is now facing credible pressure from below (Leapmotor) and from the side (Li Auto, AITO). The gap between #1 and #2 has shrunk dramatically compared with previous years.
| Segment | Top Pick | Why It Wins | Starting USD |

| $20-30k | BYD Sea Lion 06 / Fangchengbao T7 | Excellent build, hybrid flexibility, strong performance variants | $19,074 – $26,402 |
| $33k+ | Li Auto L6 / AITO M6 | Family space + EREV convenience beats pure EV anxiety for most buyers | $36,682+ |

| Li Auto | 1 | 20,878 | 6.4% |
| Tesla | 1 | 28,911 | 8.9% |

| Chery Group | 2 | 19,940 | 6.2% |
Galaxy sub-brand is no longer an experiment. The M7’s explosive growth shows Geely’s new energy strategy is finally delivering at scale.
The most dramatic single-model surge. DM-i powertrain + sharp pricing created a perfect storm in the compact PHEV segment.
Huawei-backed model felt the heat from aggressive pricing by Li Auto and BYD. Still a top-5 player, but momentum slowed sharply.
