What the Numbers Actually Tell Us

Leapmotor A10’s arrival is the most important story here. Launched only in March 2026 on an all-new platform, the compact EV has already outsold every traditional rival in the sub-100k RMB segment. At $9,662–$12,746 it undercuts almost everything while offering up to 505 km CLTC range and decent ADAS hardware. This is the clearest signal yet that Chinese brands have cracked the formula for high-volume, profitable small EVs.

Li Auto L6 continues to eat Tesla’s lunch in the family segment. Despite being an extended-range vehicle (EREV), it sits comfortably at #3. Chinese buyers are clearly voting with their wallets for the combination of big space, no range anxiety on long trips, and premium features at a lower entry price than the Model Y Long Range.

Tesla’s moat is still real but narrowing. The Model Y remains the only car above 28,000 units. Its software, charging network, and brand power keep it dominant. However, it is now facing credible pressure from below (Leapmotor) and from the side (Li Auto, AITO). The gap between #1 and #2 has shrunk dramatically compared with previous years.

What This Means for Global Buyers & Exporters

XCARSPACE PERSPECTIVE
Models like the Leapmotor A10 and C10 are now realistic volume players for export markets. Their low price, modern architecture and improving quality make them serious alternatives to legacy Japanese and Korean compact SUVs in Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa.
BYD Sea Lion series and Geely Galaxy models offer the best balance of technology, range and price for right-hand-drive markets. The rapid iteration speed of Chinese brands means 2026-2027 models will be even more competitive globally.

Biggest Movers & Surprises

+134 POSITIONS
Geely Galaxy M7

Galaxy sub-brand is no longer an experiment. The M7’s explosive growth shows Geely’s new energy strategy is finally delivering at scale.

+88 POSITIONS
BYD Sealion 05 DM-i

The most dramatic single-model surge. DM-i powertrain + sharp pricing created a perfect storm in the compact PHEV segment.

-51 POSITIONS
AITO M6

Huawei-backed model felt the heat from aggressive pricing by Li Auto and BYD. Still a top-5 player, but momentum slowed sharply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best-selling SUV in China right now?
Tesla Model Y with 28,911 units in May 2026. It remains the only model to consistently break 28,000 units monthly.
How much does the Leapmotor A10 actually cost in USD?
Starting from approximately $9,662 (65,800 RMB) up to around $12,746 for higher trims. This makes it one of the most affordable new EVs with decent range globally.
Pure EV or Hybrid — which is winning in China?
Hybrids (PHEV + EREV) still hold a slight edge in the top 26 volume. However, pure EVs dominate the very top (Model Y, Leapmotor A10, NIO ES8). The gap is narrowing fast.
Is the Model Y losing ground to Chinese rivals?
Not really in absolute numbers — it still leads by a wide margin. But the competitive pressure is real. Li Auto L6 and the new Leapmotor A10 are closing the gap from different directions (family space vs ultra-affordable urban EV).
Which models are best for export right now?
Leapmotor A10/C10, BYD Sea Lion 05/06 series, and Geely Galaxy M7 stand out for price-to-spec ratio, modern platforms, and improving global brand perception. These are the ones dealers in emerging markets are watching closely.
