How to Compare Gasoline and EV Energy Cost

Use the same distance for both vehicles and enter local prices. In U.S. mode, gasoline cost is distance ÷ MPG × price per gallon. EV electricity use is distance × 33.705 kWh ÷ MPGe. In metric mode, the tool uses liters per 100 km and kWh per 100 km directly.

The break-even electricity rate divides the calculated gasoline cost by the EV’s energy use. Below that rate, the EV costs less for energy; above it, gasoline costs less. It is an energy-only threshold, not a total-ownership result.

Inputs and exclusions

The period buttons provide editable defaults: 12,000 miles per year, 1,000 miles per month or 100 miles for a trip, with equivalent kilometer values in metric mode. This calculator excludes purchase price, depreciation, financing, insurance, maintenance, taxes, charging-network fees, home-charger installation and the value of charging time.

Use your utility bill or the U.S. Energy Information Administration electricity data for an electricity input, and the EIA gasoline price update for a regional reference. EPA explains the 33.7-kWh MPGe equivalence and charging-loss treatment in its fuel-economy testing methodology.

For a wider comparison, use the Total Cost of Ownership Calculator. The Car Ownership Cost Center connects the site’s cost tools, while our PHEV vs EV buyer guide explains when charging access reverses the recommendation.
