How to Use This EV Charging Time Calculator

Enter the usable battery capacity, current charge, target charge and the lower of the charger output or your vehicle’s charging limit. The result is a constant-power planning estimate. It is most useful for AC home charging and for comparing charging-power scenarios.

Formula: charging time = battery energy added ÷ (charger power × 90% efficiency). Energy added = usable battery capacity × the change in state of charge.

What the result includes

  • Energy that must reach the battery, in kWh.
  • A 10% wall-to-battery loss allowance.
  • Effective average power after that loss allowance.

What it does not model

DC fast charging follows a curve rather than holding one power level. Battery temperature, state of charge, charger sharing and vehicle preconditioning can all change the session. For a DC estimate, enter a realistic session-average power, not the station’s advertised peak.

Quick example

A 75-kWh usable battery charging from 20% to 80% needs 45 kWh in the battery. At 7.2 kW and 90% efficiency, the estimate is 45 ÷ (7.2 × 0.90), or about 6.9 hours.
