Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Calculator
Compare Gasoline vs Electric Vehicle Ownership Cost
What This Total Cost of Ownership Calculator Measures
The calculator compares depreciation, gasoline or electricity, insurance and maintenance over the number of years you select. Purchase price enters through depreciation: purchase price minus expected resale value.
Gas energy cost: annual miles ÷ MPG × gasoline price × years.
EV energy cost: annual miles ÷ miles per kWh × electricity price × years.
If you select kilometers, annual distance is converted to miles before the MPG and miles-per-kWh formulas are applied. All cost fields are nominal dollars; the tool does not discount future cash flows.
Inputs and exclusions
Use actual dealer prices, insurance quotes and a conservative resale estimate. The result excludes sales tax, registration, financing, lease charges, home electrical work, public-charging premiums, parking, incentives and model-specific repair risk. Depreciation can outweigh a modest energy saving.
Use the EIA gasoline price update and EIA electricity data as regional references, then replace them with your actual local rates.
