Why World Are Increasingly Falling in Love with Chinese Cars: Highlights from the 2026 Beijing Auto Show

The 2026 Beijing Auto Show delivered a striking “change in the crowd.” Walk through the halls and you’ll see faces of every skin tone weaving between Chinese brand pavilions, while English, Arabic, Spanish, Italian and other languages fill the air.

Two scenes captured the shift perfectly. As soon as the show opened, a Middle Eastern dealer rushed to a booth and told reporters that Chinese new-energy vehicles are now red-hot in his market—he had already locked in several preferred brands for this trip. That same afternoon, Great Wall Motor’s stand was packed, with BMW Group executives listening intently as Great Wall Chairman Wei Jianjun explained the brand’s latest intelligent technologies.

Hard numbers back up the buzz. In the first quarter of 2026, China exported 2.226 million vehicles, a year-on-year surge of 56.7%. New-energy vehicle (NEV) exports alone hit 954,000 units, jumping more than 120%.

From “Seeing the World in China” to “The World Seeing China”

Chinese auto production and sales have led the world for 17 straight years, and the Beijing and Shanghai motor shows have long ranked among the planet’s top-tier events. Yet the shows themselves have quietly transformed. They are no longer just stages for multinational giants to display products in China. Instead, Chinese brands now take center stage, showcasing a full-spectrum rise—from cutting-edge technology to powerful global branding.

At BYD’s pavilion, visitors experienced live demonstrations of -30°C ultra-fast charging, the “Eye of the Gods” full-scene parking assist, easy three-way charging, and off-road capabilities, highlighting the company’s leadership in intelligent driving and electrification. During the show, Geely unveiled the global debut of its second-generation Galaxy Light concept car and its first native new-energy off-road architecture, alongside the i-HEV intelligent hybrid system. Foreign media crews flocked there for live broadcasts and reports.

The electric atmosphere on the stands mirrored real-world success overseas. While cameras focused on Chinese cars, overseas buyers were already voting with their wallets.

In Australia, Zeekr’s 7X recorded 1,725 sales in the first quarter, outselling traditional luxury brands (BMW, Benz, Audi) to claim the top spot in the premium SUV segment. Great Wall Motor President Mu Feng noted that the company now has more than 16 million global users, with cumulative overseas sales exceeding 2 million vehicles. It operates three full-process vehicle plants in Thailand and Brazil, plus multiple KD factories in Ecuador, Pakistan and elsewhere.

From “Value for Money” to “Intelligence Value”

Foreigners’ growing affection for Chinese cars goes far beyond attractive prices. At this year’s show, Chinese brands unveiled dozens of core technologies—covering intelligent driving, self-developed chips, next-generation batteries, vehicle architectures and smart cabins—an all-time high.

Huawei’s “Whale” battery platform made its physical debut as the second pillar of safety technology after its advanced driver-assistance systems. The platform creates a closed-loop intelligent safety ecosystem across five dimensions: data security, waterproof sealing, underbody protection, temperature uniformity and cloud-edge collaboration. It moves beyond traditional passive defense to active prediction and real-time protection.

Chery brought 31 technology exhibits, demonstrating a complete AI-driven ecosystem. From core battery materials, powertrains and chassis architecture to intelligent cabins, driving assistance, humanoid robots, green power generation, mobile carbon capture and integrated solar-storage-charging solutions, Chery now spans automobiles, robotics, energy and mobility.

Even global supply-chain giants are voting with their feet. Bosch Group Board Member and President of Bosch Intelligent Mobility Solutions, Dr. Markus Heyn, explained: “Thanks to strong local R&D capabilities, a global innovation network and close cooperation with business partners, Bosch is moving in lockstep with China’s electrification and intelligent transformation, turning innovation into commercial success.” Bosch’s electric axle drive was first developed and put into production in China; the technology and know-how have since been localized across Asia, Europe and the Americas.

This year’s Beijing Auto Show drew supply-chain and tech companies from 21 countries and regions—up sharply from previous editions.

From “Following the Supply Chain” to “Leading Global Decisions”

More and more multinational automakers are now basing core R&D decisions, global product premieres and supply-chain partnerships in China—and bringing them to the Beijing show. The show itself is being redefined: it is no longer merely an exhibition, but a global “council chamber” where the auto industry sets rules and builds consensus.

BMW Group Chairman Oliver Zipse said of the debut of the new-generation BMW iX3 long-wheelbase and i3 long-wheelbase models—developed specifically for China: “The significance goes far beyond the launch of two new products. These vehicles fully demonstrate our innovation strength, validate the effectiveness of our ‘in China, for China, with China’ strategy, and underscore our firm commitment to this most important market.”

Porsche chose the show for the global debut of its all-new pure-electric Cayenne Turbo Coupé and the China debut of the pure-electric Cayenne Turbo. Beyond products, Porsche’s China R&D center—its first comprehensive overseas R&D base outside Weissach—continues to boost localized decision-making. Its first major result, a fully China-developed infotainment system tailored to the market, will launch within the year.

The newly completed Capital International Exhibition Center and Shunyi Hall are now seamlessly linked by corridors, creating a massive “vehicle + supply chain” super-zone. The number of countries and regions represented by parts suppliers jumped from 13 in 2024 to 21 this year. CATL, BYD Battery, REPT Battero and others showcased solid-state batteries, sodium-ion batteries and comprehensive power-battery solutions.

“Beyond products and technology, China’s stable supply chain offers the global auto industry something truly rare: certainty,” one foreign dealer group executive told reporters.

The message from the 2026 Beijing Auto Show is clear: Chinese cars have moved from “good enough” to “best in class” in the eyes of the world. What began as admiration for value has become respect for innovation—and that respect is only growing.
